Geographical Data

The murders were committed in the East London area known as Whitechapel. Whitechapel in 1888 was an overcrowded slum area. It was full of poor (over 80% of families there lived in a single room), immigrants (in particular Jews from Eastern Europe who often spoke their own language and dressed differently to English locals). It was also known for its crime problems and unruly behaviour such as drunkenness and prostitution.
