How can the ideas of the simulation be used by you?
The following 3 steps will help you create your own simulations within a "Big Picture" simulation.
take away.
step 1: the Big Picture

Goal:
Provides students with something to invest in - achieved through:
-
Competition with a potential winner at the end.
-
Links to other areas of the course.
-
Statistic or Visual on a Leaderboard.
-
Rewards in real life - make it worth getting
The Big Picture is the larger context - the major simulation that the smaller simulations fall within.
This live stream was taken of the simulation we ran along with the map.
the country simulation
other classes
Any way to recognize "influence" is a great starting point.
We wanted to students to understand the concept of "political influence".

Solution: Prestige
-
A mathematical formula combining different elements of the major simulation.
-
It is balanced across the different teams regardless of their size.
-
Reflects real life - its components and abilities

The formula for the Conference simulation is:
Income +
Number of Soldiers +
Battle Win / Loss Ratio +
Happiness (+1 if happy) +
Alliances
Maths
Big Picture: Seven Ate Nine - When Numbers Go Bad
Description:
-
Teams could be different types of numbers; Primes, Wholes, Mixed, etc with different strengths and weaknesses.
-
Depending on the level the map could be a geometric design which geometric questions could be drawn from (Tangents, Opposites, Sine)
-
Team showing mastery of a standard can push them to a reward level
Language Class
Big Picture: Cultural Revolution
Description:
-
Can use real map of the world
-
Teams from different countries who speak that language.
-
Try to spread your language/culture to other "neutral" countries who then come under their influence
-
The teams vie to spread there "true" form of French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, etc
-
If it is a large school with several languages taught the competition could be inter-class with the winner culturally dominating the world
Economics or Design / Engineering
Big Picture: The Unfriendly Skies
Description:
-
Can use real world map
-
Marketing campaigns, logos, airport slot costs vs aeroplanes fares, supply and demand
-
Events like Olympics or World Cup could bring opportunities teams could cash in on.
-
For engineering crew better designs could lead to larger capacity, less fuel cost, more safety, etc.
incentives

Rewards:
-
Use the "nice" table and chairs in the room
-
Share "calamities" - good or bad - with others
-
Settle disputes between other teams
-
They choose the order of speaking at conferences
